Dr. Paul Cutarelli Talks About Your LASIK Evaluation:
Dr. Paul Cutarelli explains that it is vital during your pre-LASIK eye examination that he analyze any risk factors that may make you a less than ideal candidate for LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Cutarelli discusses any abnormal findings with you at length, some of which are described here.
- Previous Eye Surgery: Dr. Paul Cutarelli asks about each patient about other types of refractive surgery they may have had in the past, any of which may complicate the LASIK procedure.
- Your Current Refraction: Dr. Paul Cutarelli examines patients for high myopia or high hyperopia, as these people may not be good candidates for LASIK eye surgery. The amount of corneal tissue that would need to be removed is beyond the safety level of the LASIK procedure.
- Corneal Thickness: Dr. Cutarelli explains that because the LASIK procedure entails the removal of corneal tissue, your corneas must be thick enough to allow this. Patients who have thin corneas are may not be good candidates for LASIK. Dr. Cutarelli explains that in these cases the risk for excessive corneal weakening after surgery is too great and other procedures may be more appropriate.
- Tear Production: Dr. Paul Cutarelli cautions that you must have adequate tear production to qualify for the LASIK procedure. If you experience dry eye symptoms, such as burning, redness, and tearing, these symptoms may have worse after LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Cutarelli explains that corneal nerves that are partly responsible for stimulating tear secretion are cut during the LASIK procedure. Patients who begin with limited tears are likely to experience greater discomfort after the LASIK procedure, and therefore may not be appropriate LASIK candidates.
- Corneal Curvature: Dr. Paul Cutarelli utilizes devices are called topographers to measure the overall shape and curvature of your cornea. Anything unusual in the curvature of your cornea may indicate a weakness than that might put your cornea at risk If this were the case, Dr. Cutarelli would exclude you from having LASIK safely.
- Pupil Size: Dr. Paul Cutarelli explains that with the recent advancements in technology, previous issues with glare and halos after LASIK are less likely now than in the past. However, patients with larger than average pupil size may be more prone to noticing night-vision issues, so Dr. Cutarelli thorough pre-LASIK examination includes taking measurements of each patient’s pupil size.
